In 1970, a small town newspaper went belly up. With help from a rich relative, it's bought by 23-year-old Willie Traynor. The business receives a boost thanks to his editorial efforts and coverage of a brutal rape and murder committed by the son of the town's bootlegger family. Traynor launches a crusade to ensure the murderer is brought to justice. When a guilty verdict is returned, the town is relieved to find the Padgitts' grip on the town did not sway the jury. When Padgitt is released after serving less than a decade in jail and members of the jury are murdered, the town is again at the mercy of its renegade family.
